RICHARD CARPENTER
CERTIFIED TAX LAW SPECIALIST
NAMED A 2008 "SUPER LAWYER"

WHEN DEALING WITH THE IRS, EXPERIENCE IS CRITICAL AND RESULTS ARE WHAT COUNT
... THAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE.

RICHARD CARPENTER's BACKGROUND:

    • 24+ YEARS OF TAX LAW EXPERIENCE -- Since 1984, I have successfully assisted more than one thousand clients with their IRS and California civil and criminal tax disputes.

    • CERTIFIED TAX LAW SPECIALIST --- I am a Certified Tax Law Specialist (State Bar of California). This is the highest tax designation available to a California attorney.

    • "AV" (HIGHEST) RATING - I am an "AV" rated attorney by Martindale-Hubbell. This is the highest and most prestigious rating available to an attorney. An "AV" rating is a sign that I am considered by my peers to be at the highest level of professional excellence.

    • TAX LAW PROFESSOR - Since January 1993, I have been a part-time Tax Law Professor at the prestigious University of San Diego School of Law graduate tax program. I teach both the Criminal Tax Fraud and Tax Court Litigation classes. Also, as the Director of its innovative Tax Controversy Clinic, I teach aspiring tax lawyers how to effectively resolve IRS tax disputes.

  • VICE CHAIR OF THE CALIFORNIA TAX LAW SECTION - I recently served a one-year appointment as Vice Chair of the 3,000+ member Taxation Section of the State Bar of California.

  • 14 PUBLISHED ARTICLES - I have written 14 published articles, including some of the leading tax law articles resolving IRS tax disputes.

    • NAMED A TOP SAN DIEGO COUNTY ATTORNEY - I was honored to be named one of the 2007 Top San Diego County Attorneys by the San Diego Daily Transcript legal newspaper on May 4, 2007.

    • NAMED A 2008 "SUPER LAWYER" - I was honored to be named a 2008 "Super Lawyer."

    • STRONG ACADEMIC BACKGROUND - In 1975, I received my BBA degree in accounting from the prestigious Baruch School of Business of the City University of New York. In 1977, my Master of Science degree in Tax from Long Island University in New York, and in 1984, my Juris Doctor law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law.

    • CPA EXPERIENCE - From 1977 to 1981 (prior to my attending law school), I worked for four years for an international CPA firm in the Wall Street section of New York City. This wonderful east-coast/west-coast experience gives me a unique perspective in resolving IRS tax disputes. I first became a New York CPA in 1979 and then a California CPA in 1982. I am currently a California CPA (inactive status).

    • PERSONAL ATTENTION - Each and every client receives my direct personal attention.

  • SPECIALIZED TAX CONTROVERSY PRACTICE - My tax law practice is limited to civil and criminal tax controversy defense. Successfully resolving tax disputes is what I do all day long, each and every day.

        • TAX LAW JOURNAL EDITOR - During 2003 and 2004, I was the Editor of the prestigious California Tax Lawyer journal.  This is the official Tax Law Journal of the Taxation Section of the State Bar of California.

TAX DEFENSE MINDSET - Unlike some tax controversy defense attorneys, I did not start out my legal career as an IRS attorney using the Tax Code against honest taxpayers. I also did not start out my legal career as a federal prosecutor working to put good people in prison for some mistakes on their tax returns. Instead, I have devoted my entire 24+ year legal career helping to defend hardworking, family-oriented taxpayers against the far and powerful reaches of the Internal Revenue Service and I am proud of that accomplishment. Being an effective tax controversy defense attorney is a mindset and I have had that tax defense mindset for my entire 24+ year legal career.

WARNING: Tax law is complex. Thus, it is very important that you hire only an experienced, State Bar Certified, tax attorney to represent you and that you carefully review their background before you hire them. I recommend a minimum of 15 years of tax controversy defense experience. Don't be fooled by some glitzy looking "tax-help" website. As you may have already noticed, many of those websites intentionally avoid listing the background of the tax person who will be working on your case because he / she is either a novice attorney, or worst yet only a para-legal or an accountant.

Successfully solving tax law problems requires skill, plus tax law knowledge and years of experience. It is certainly not a job for a novice attorney. To protect yourself, you should hire only a tax attorney who is a Certified Tax Law Specialist by the State Bar. Remember, there is no such thing as a routine call or letter to the IRS. A skilled Certified tax lawyer will tailor each communication precisely to your specific tax defense plan. Each communication to the IRS means something and it is very important that nothing is overlooked or taken for granted.

REFERENCES - I am happy to provide each and every potential client with a long list of references.

EXPERT GUIDANCE . . . Many tax attorneys and CPA's look to San Diego Tax Attorney Richard Carpenter for expert guidance in helping their clients resolve serious tax problems with the IRS.

RESULTS . . . that's the bottom line ... what every client is looking for.  Despite my strong record of favorable client outcomes during the past 24+ years, I refrain from making any case result promises to you over the internet without knowing the complete facts of your case. Each tax case is different. Instead, if you retain me as your tax attorney, I promise to carefully listen to you about your specific tax situation, to fully educate you about the unique intricacies of your case, to meticulously perform my work, and to provide the IRS and/or the Court with the most advantageous position of your case. Over the past 24+ years, this attention to detail approach has benefited my clients greatly.
